on the Drakor's Curse
“Harju-Autti’s debut fantasy novel, a crew’s mid-18th-century trading voyage leads them to a strange island whose residents harbor curious views on love and death. Harju-Autti’s concise novel ably blends a tale of adapting to an unknown culture with introspection on death. An often-engaging fictional exploration of the topic of mortality.”

"a gripping historical adventure laced with eerie speculation and moral depth. What initially seems like a fascinating anthropological discovery quickly spirals into a confrontation with destiny itself.
A genre-defying novel that challenges the boundaries of knowledge, colonialism, and mortality, and I’d certainly recommend it to readers who like their adventures smart, strange, and unforgettable."
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"A beautifully crafted historical fantasy, this novel fearlessly explores questions of mortality, the afterlife, and destiny. The story is at once deceptively light and compellingly philosophical, gently pulling the reader into a reflection on life’s deepest struggles. This unique take on the role of life and death in civilization is a thought-provoking, challenging, and poignant addition to any fantasy reader’s library."

Ever wondered what it would be like to know the exact date of your death marked on your forehead? I appreciate the author's creativity in putting this story together. While reading, I get to understand that facing death is part of life's beauty. One quote from the book that stands out to me is that "life is most beautiful when you don't know what will happen next." I would recommend this book to individuals who enjoy books with historical adventures with a touch of fantasy.

"There's so much to like in this story. The premise, when you think about it, is quite chilling: nobody much likes to dwell on their death. But Harju-Autti's treatment of it is rather kind and gentle, even as it goes through the negatives as well as the positives in a society where everyone knows the date of their own death. It's an inquiring story in which readers are invited to think for themselves rather than one in which the author has already decided how things will or should be."

"A thought-provoking story that examines the concepts of life and death. The book highlights the value of time and emphasizes the importance of cherishing moments with family and friends. While we are fortunate to live in a world that allows for creativity, we are also burdened by the anxiety surrounding death. This book combines elements of romance, adventure, philosophy, and family.
I truly enjoyed reading it."

"A philosophical and visionary work of fantasy. This fantastical story allows readers to slowly submerge into the surreal premise of the tale, while the themes being explored are heady and fascinating.
How would an awareness of mortality change our perspectives on purpose and connection? Is a daily reminder of life’s sacred and transient nature truly a curse at all?"
A novel that is simultaneously elegant and impactful for young and old readers alike."
"A beautifully written story that explores themes of culture, exploration, and mortality. It takes readers on a captivating adventure and introduces dynamic characters whose lives are interwoven. The relationship between Julius and Peter transcends that of a typical father and son. I highly recommend this book for its insightful and meaningful message about cherishing time and life."

Loved it! 😍 A refreshingly original fantasy fairy tale, set against the rich backdrop of the 18th century. Threaded through the narrative are moments of quiet wisdom and gentle reflection. The presence of a dragon adds a layer of myth and wonder, enriching the tale without overwhelming its human core. While the voyage offers adventure and discovery, the heart of the story lies in its meditation on what it means to live well and love deeply. I found this novel both enchanting and thought-provoking. Its originality lies not only in its imaginative setting but also in the way it draws readers toward deeper truths. A captivating read for those who love their fantasy rich in meaning as well as magic.
I love scary and intense stories, and it doesn’t get much better than LoveVortex and the Drakor’s Curse.
It is unputdownable. Expertly woven mystery, action, and suspense will keep the reader guessing from beginning to end. There’s a little something for everyone. Lovers of historical fiction steeped in mythology shouldn’t miss this one. It’s a triumph. Dive in now!

This novel showcases refined, thoughtful writing that skillfully captures the atmosphere of a remote island community. The author’s prose is measured and clear, allowing the story’s subtle emotional layers to emerge naturally. Harju-Autti’s storytelling is steady, and the pacing is pitch-perfect, driven by a quiet intensity that balances with dialogue that feels authentic. Overall, this is a wonderful read. Recommended.

LoveVortex and the Drakor’s Curse is a historical fantasy novel, first in a series, that addresses philosophical questions. The novel provides fascinating details about the tribe, all organized around this awareness. Julius and Peter feel perfectly suited for this journey of discovery, open-minded and eager to learn from the tribe. Julius, Peter, and the crew, however, sometimes act more like tolerant 21st century Europeans, than 18th century sailors hoping to expand the British empire. Still, readers looking for a fantasy novel raising issues about free will and destiny, one where conversations solve problems, will enjoy this offering.
The story sweeps swiftly from sea storms to mythic encounters to the deepening father–son bond, while its reflective currents draw readers into questions of mortality and meaning. The result is both a swashbuckling fantasy and a thoughtful allegory. Readers of historical fantasy who crave both excitement and substance will be gratified."

A highly original premise enriched by a fast-paced, accessible writing style. A gripping narrative, which is often thought-provoking too. In fact, as a book for a book club, this is perfect. I could well imagine a group of readers discussing this book at length, and exploring the ups and downs of knowing the day you are going to kick the bucket.
All in all, a fascinating read.
“Darkly imaginative and
profoundly moving.
At its heart, the novel poses complex questions: is destiny immutable, or can love and courage change what seems carved in stone? These stories give the novel its emotional weight, shifting it from seafaring drama to philosophical reflection. The author does not offer an easy answer. Instead, he delivers a narrative that blends myth and history, balancing action with reflection in a way that will appeal to readers of both fantasy and literary fiction. An imaginative and deeply resonant tale that lingers well beyond the last page.”
Must read 🏆
Adventure meets philosophy as a captain and son face storms, an island curse, and the meaning of life in this lush, thought-provoking tale. Overall, this is an inspiring and beautifully written novel that lingers in the mind long after the final page. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy historical adventure with a philosophical twist, as well as richly detailed world-building.

the Enlightenment of a Nameless Cat
“A thought-provoking, highly original tale, the sort you want to discuss with others long after you finish reading it. I was captivated by this thought-provoking story from the very first chapter.
Pekka Harju-Autti is such a good writer who excels in putting over a ‘life journey’ in a compelling and, often, surprising way.
I first enjoyed his work in LoveVortex and the Dragon’s Curse, which I also very much enjoyed. But I honestly feel this new novel is stronger.”
A Wishing Shelf ‘Highly Recommended’ book.

“Some stories draw you into adventure, others invite you to look within. This book does both with quiet grace. It feels like a journey through the heart and mind at once, a meditation on love, awareness, and the beauty of simply being alive. This is not a loud book. It speaks softly, yet what it says stays with you long after the last page. LoveVortex and the Enlightenment of a Nameless Cat is a gentle treasure, a story that asks for your stillness and gives peace in return. It reminds us that love, in its truest form, is not about possession but presence, and that sometimes the greatest wisdom arrives quietly, in the company of a creature who never needed a name.”

As a writer, I guess I'm supposed to tell here something about myself. But hey, it's all about the story, not about the writer. Moreover, I don't identify myself much as a writer.
